Wildflower meadow for Loudoun Hill
Cumnock based East Ayrshire Woodlands have begun the process of further enhancing a local beauty spot with the cultivation and sowing of a wildflower meadow by the car park at Loudoun Hill.
The grasslands by the car park, whilst abundant in insect life generally, will hopefully be improved further by the sowing of a range of native species to add both colour and increased habitat for the benefit of biodiversity.
Should we have a particularly dry summer, as much of the spring has been, the meadow will also be re-sown in the autumn, with the addition of yellow rattle, to weaken the strangling hold of grass species as we slowly develop the meadow into a resource for both public and wildlife benefit. The stones we removed during cultivation were built into two cairns to provide a further habitat for invertebrates attracted to the meadow.
We gratefully received CSV Action Earth funding for the project.
