Children from two different primary schools came together to work on a joint project to help others, in the run-up to the schools merging on a new shared campus.

On a cold and frosty morning, the youngsters of Patna Primary and St Xavier's Primary planted 1500 bulbs in a field at the entrance to Patna village to create a Marie Curie 'Field of Hope'. Local Councillor Elaine Dinwoodie lent a hand and the Council's Outdoor Amenities Section prepared the ground for the children.

The whole school had previously enjoyed a dress-down day. With proceeds from this, pupils made a small donation towards the cost of the bulbs, as did Councillor Dinwoodie.

The children are now looking forward to 1500 golden daffodils blooming in the 'Field of Hope' in spring, bringing a bit of sunshine to the area. The daffodils will raise valuable funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care and give people the chance to dedicate a daffodil in memory of someone special.

Patna Head Teacher Sharon Yorston said: "Primary 7 class teacher Isabelle Dunsford approached me with the bulb-planting idea. I thought joint planting with St Xavier's Primary would be a good project and the first joint working opportunity for the two schools. Jim Campbell, Head Teacher at St. Xavier's, was keen to become involved."

Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning Councillor Iain Linton said: "It's great that the two schools are forward-thinking enough to work on such an excellent project together. I can't wait to see the daffodils in spring. Knowing that each of the bulbs was planted by a child for Marie Curie Cancer Care will make the sight of those beautiful daffodils even more breathtaking."

Councillor Elaine Dinwoodie said: "I am delighted to support the children in this project. They are learning about nature, making new friends through working together - and they are certainly enhancing the environment!"

East Ayrshire Council is progressing plans for a new shared school campus in Patna for 2012, when children from the two schools will merge.
