Mounted police will be hitting the streets of Cumnock as part of the crackdown over the festive period.

Top cop, Inspector Jim Drennan has told the Chronicle that additional policing will be in force in the town centre over the busiest period the year, in a bid to ensure residents are safe.

Police are also warning people to watch out for opportunist thieves out to take advantage of the "season of goodwill".

Inspector Drennan said: 'We have been successful in recent years tackling head-on those who choose to upset the peace. I can reassure the public that they will see significant additional police presence on the streets.

Our Christmas and New Year initiative will see these officers engage in high-visibility patrols across the East Ayrshire community, helping our citizens to remain safe and secure during this enjoyable time of year.'
