A NEW programme for Cumnock Academy pupils has been launched by Cumnock Juniors Community Enterprise (CJCE) in partnership with Vibrant Communities.

The Leadership Academy involves S4-S6 pupils and will see them supported by CJCE to gain nationally recognised sports coaching awards as well as volunteering experience through the enterprise’s activities.

A group of 15 pupils have signed up to the programme after completing the application process and undertaking a practical assessment involving coaching sessions with primary school pupils.

Initially CJCE were looking to support 10 pupils but such was the success of the pupils involved, more were allowed to continue.

The programme ties in with the Year of the Young Person and will also be able to form part of the SQA Ambassador Awards and the Saltire Award programme for volunteers.

Benefits to the young people will include gaining nationally recognised qualifications, developing new skills and experience, exercising leadership and problem solving– all of which is hoped will improve their confidence and enhance their job prospects.

There have been many previous success stories involving the enterprise with volunteers who were supported with coaching moving on to full time employment and coaching in the USA.

The successful group have now been through an induction day, which also saw them complete a PVG, a child and wellbeing course and receive their new kit. Further training – including with the SFA, netball and all-ability cycling – is already being organised.
