A FORMER teacher at Auchinleck Academy has been named adult volunteer of the year at the Police Scotland Youth Volunteer (PSVY) Awards.

Philip Radwell has volunteered with PSYV Cumnock for the last four years and has now been recognised for the work he does helping young people.

The 63-year-old explained: “Adults are very quick to put young people down but unless we get off our backside and help, these kids wouldn’t have a chance.

“PSYV gives the kids the opportunity to do things they wouldn’t normally. We do a bit of drill, cover police initiatives, get police units in like the dog units and the mounted branch. We do anything where the local community would like a hand.

“We’ve done volunteering at the Commonwealth Games, Dumfries House and they were at Muirkirk Gala Day at the weekend.

“I’ve had parents come up to me and say ‘What have you done to my child?’ because they are emptying the dishwasher and asking to help around the house.”

Inspector McHarg, of Ayrshire Division, added: “It was great to see Phil’s work recognised at the national PSYV awards.

“Phil has actively supported PSYV and the young people through the weekly group meetings, by attending events and acting as a mentor for those involved.”
