MUIRKIRK was basking in glorious sunshine this weekend for the Gala Day and Classic Car Show at Kames Motorsport Complex.

On Saturday, Muirkirk Primary School head teacher Anne McLean opened the gala before crowning Louise Ward as the Gala Queen.

Firefighters from Muirkirk Community Fire Station were showing off their engine and Police Scotland's youth volunteers were entertaining kids with the van's siren.

The women of the village upset the odds to defeat the men in the annual tug o war competition. The afternoon included a fancy dress competition, Zumba and dance demonstrations and a well-supported dog show.

The gala day committee would like to thank all who contributed to making this such a memorable occasion.

One of the organisers, Cheryl Shepherd said: "We were delighted with the turn out at Muirkirk Gala Day, we had the perfect weather for it and it was great to see so many of our village attending. The Gala Court all looked amazing and did their families proud and a massive thank you to Mrs McLean for crowning our queen.

"Thank you to the whole of Muirkirk who support the Gala Day throughout the year, the Gala Day could not happen without their support."

There was local success at the car show on the Sunday as Muirkirk's own Marc McCubbin stole the show with his immaculate Ford Sierra Cosworth.

Organisers described the show's line up as "the best to date" as record crowds flocked to the car show.

The awards were presented by teenagers Amy McCubbin – Auchinleck Academy pupil and Marc's daughter – and Andrew Blackwood from Stewarton, both fresh from rallying in Fife.

A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Car Club said: "Such was the quality of the entry, there was no single star of the show although much attention was paid to the Ford GT40 which is a rarity in this part of the world."
