A MAN put ‘his own life and others in jeopardy’ as he drove home to Cumnock five times the limit.

Kevin Morgan, of Phillips Wynd, who admitted drink driving in January this year, has been banned from driving for three years.

The 40-year-old appeared before Sheriff Desmond Leslie at Ayr Sheriff Court.

Depute Fiscal Linsay Bain said: “At 10.10pm police received reports from members of the public regarding a driver who appeared to be under the influence.

“Officers made their attempts to trace the vehicle which had been seen in Cumnock on Glaisnock Street. At 10.15pm they traced the car at his home address.

“The accused was in the drivers side with the lights switched on. Police spoke to him and he was under the influence.”

Speaking on his behalf, defence solicitor, Mandy Stewart, said: “Mr Morgan is fully aware of the position he is in, mainly because it was a high reading, but also because he has a criminal conviction from 11 years ago.

“Mr Morgan lives with his family and has a great deal of family support who are with him today. Following this incident Mr Morgan contacted Addaction in February and has contacted his GP.

“He and his family have taken steps to put support in place to stop this from happening again. He realised he does face a custodial sentence but I invite your Lordship to impose a community payback order.”

Addressing the dock, Sheriff Leslie, said: “You were five times the legal limit which is an extremely high reading. Not only did you put your own life in jeopardy but others.

“I don’t think I need to give you a lecture on drink driving. Any further offending, custody will be visited with a prison sentence.

“You have to take advice, guidance and counselling and you have to stop drinking for your own sake and for the sake of your family.”

Morgan has been placed on a community payback order and will remain under supervision for 18 months. He will complete 200 hours unpaid work within six months.

He has also been disqualified from driving for three years.
