MAUCHLINE Horticultural and Agricultural Society held a special presentation at their coffee morning on Saturday, May 12.

Treasurer Dr Keith Martin retired at their recent AGM having joined committee in October 1961. He served as secretary in 1968 and as vice president from 1975 to 1984 when he became president.

From 1981, Keith combined his role with that of treasure until he retired as president in 2011. To mark his long servitude, the society presented him with a garden bench from Dalrymple Woodcraft.

A spokesperson for the society said: “Keith’s days as treasurer continue until January this year. This was a great achievement – as anyone who belongs to a committee will know – it is difficult persuading people to serve for a few years never mind 50 years.

“He was presented with a beautiful garden bench made by Dalrymple Woodcraft which was much admired by everyone. We wish him many happy day to sit on the bench and enjoy his garden and hope the weather cooperates.

“At our coffee morning – as well as the tea/coffee and home baking which was enjoyed by everyone – there were plants for sale, guess the number of sweets in the jar (the winning guess was 122) and a crafty/produce sales table, where you could buy marmalade, jam, chutney, cards, lavender bags and lots more.

“The tombola included a picture painted by one of our members and was much sot after. Almost £600 was raised on the day.

“This couldn’t have been done without the hard work of the committee and friend who supplied the baking, produce, plants etc.

“The biggest thank you must go to all those who attended, supported the society and enjoyed their day.”
