A NEW committee has been appointed to take on the running of Sanquhar Town Hall.

The future of the town hall had been in limbo but the community have rallied together to ensure it continues to be an asset to Upper Nithsdale.

Meetings have taken place with Dumfries and Galloway Council and representatives from Third Sector First to help decide what would happen to the town hall going forward.

The new management committee will now begin fundraising so that they have the money to keep the town hall open.

Andrew McDowall Jnr said: “I am sure you will all be aware of the current situation regarding the town hall.

“Recently we advertised looking for volunteers to assist in the on going running of the hall.

“Since then we have had various meetings with Dumfries and Galloway Council, representatives from Third Sector First and members of the community.

“It was refreshing to see so many members in attendance at these meetings and also taking the time to complete surveys that were put out.

“I am pleased to report that a management committee has now been formed and our constitution is now being implemented.

“The plan for the town hall at this time is for it to continue to run this as it’s present purpose but with the view to make it more appealing and affordable for our community.

“We as a management committee are now asking you the community of Upper Nithsdale to get behind us in this new venture, to allow us to keep to town hall functioning.

“To start we need to raise funds to allow us to do this as we will be setting out with a balance of nil.

“I am sure you will all agree it would be a sad day if this hall closes however to keep it open we need you’re full support.

“Keep an eye out for up coming fundraising events and we hope you will come along and support us.

“This is our chance to keep our town hall open.”
