CROOKS are taking advantage of an increase in theft opportunities brought about by the lighter nights.

A property owner in Barskimming Road, Mauchline, found that out when power tools worth £340 were stolen from a garden shed.

The haul included a Parker chainsaw and a Scheppach log splitter which were taken between noon on Thursday, April 5 and late morning on April 7.

Anyone who noticed anything suspicious or has any information which can help police investigations should call them on 101.

PC Craig Marshall said: “Often incidents like this are more frequent in the summer months.

“Our advice would be to keep power tools and other valuable equipment out of sight. If they are being kept in a shed, keep it secure at all times.”

Another victim left counting the cost, not to mention much inconvenience, was targeted by vandals just after 9pm on Tuesday, April 10.

Yobs hurled a brick through the living room window of a house in Heathfield Road, Auchinleck, smashing it to smithereens.

It appears the resident had left the house at 9pm for less than half-an-hour, during which time the vandals struck.

Cumnock Police are again appealing for help in catching those responsible, as the window shattering would have made a loud noise.

Call 101 if you can help or, alternatively, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111where the information can be given anonymously.

Residents are being urged to increase their security, in particular when garden tools are being used increasingly as there are more hours of daylight.

“If you have a garden, it’s the first thing an intruder will have to deal with if they want to try and break into your house.

“There are also items in your garden or which you may keep in a garden shed or garage which a thief will find attractive,” PC Marshall added.

Ways to avoid being a victim include keeping hedges low at the front of your property; install security lighting; don’t leave bins where they can be used to gain access to windows; keep all ladders out of sight and under lock and key.
