Science has well and truly been in action at New Cumnock Primary School. Recently they held a very successful Science Week focussing on the topic of Exploration and Discovery.

Throughout the week, various presenters were invited in to hold workshops which were all positively spoken about by the children. Ian Sloan shared about windfarms, Wendy Pring carried out various science experiments about eggs, Stephanie MacIntyre shared about DNA extraction and the children were able to attend the Mobile Planitarium to discover some information about our solar system.

Howie the ranger from Dean Park was a huge hit with all the classes too as he developed outdoor lessons relating to exploration and discovery for all classes, from considering dinosaurs, to pond and river life, birds nests and survival outdoors.

Each class worked on a mini science topic throughout the week and created a showcase which parents were invited to browse and then all the classes were allocated time slots to discover what each class had been learning about and share successes.

Also throughout the week, two design competitions were carried out and judged by a member of the community to choose the five finalists of each to be then sent off and judged nationally. We wish the winners of these all the best and look forward to hearing of their successes – finalist names can be found on the school website.

A Scientist of the Week certificate and prize was presented to pupils who showed commitment and enthusiasm towards the activities set – they are Jacobi, Charles, Mollie, Mason, Hayley, Koby, Kelsie and Callum – well done to all.
