A PENSIONER has died and five people were injured following an accident on the A76 between Cumnock and New Cumnock last night.

A 68-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident at around 11pm on Saturday, March 24.

She was a passenger in a Vauxhall Antara which was travelling southbound when it became involved in a three-car collision with a northbound Ford Focus and a grey Peugeot 307.

The three occupants of the Ford Focus, as well as the driver and another passenger of the Vauxhall Antara were all treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the Peugeot fled the scene of the collision.

The road was closed for several hours as police began an extensive investigation into the cause of the crash.

Sergeant Ian Thornton said: “Extensive enquiries are underway to locate the driver of the Peugeot motor car who fled the scene of the crash.

"I am appealing for anyone, who was in the area at the time of the collision, or who may have dash cam footage, or who may have seen the Peugeot car being driven prior to the incident occurring to contact us.

"You may have information which could assist our enquiries as we try to establish the circumstances of this incident which has resulted in a woman’s death.”
