WORK to refurbish Kirkconnel’s Miners’ Memorial has been completed alongside a new Interpretation Board to highlight the history of Fauldhead Colliery.

Funding allocated by Sanquhar Academy’s Propel Committee allowed the Brighten up Kirkconnel and Kelloholm group to undertake the work.

Chairperson of Brighten up Kirkconnel and Kelloholm, Gary Hughes said: “In 2017 we applied for funding from Propel at Sanquhar Academy to get the existing paving slabs replaced with Monoblock and get the steps repaired and a hand rail fitted.

“We were delighted to find out our application had been successful and work commenced during spring 2017.

“A few months later we decided to get an interpretation board made highlighting the history of Fauldhead and during this time we started collecting bricks made at Fauldhead to make the base for the board.

“Coal was then embedded into it to complete it.

“Getting this completed this year makes it very significant as 2018 marks the 50th year since Fauldhead closed.

“We are delighted with the finished job and it is now looking with the respect it deserves.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Propel Committee for granting the funding, Jimmy Currie and his team from JMC Contracts for the first class job done and John Tup Cameron for making the stand for the board.”
