FAMILY and friends joined Mason Kidd as he picked up the Cumnock Young Citizen of the Year Award on Monday evening.

He was presented with the award by Caroline Rowan at Cumnock Old Church while Provost of East Ayrshire Jim Todd and Depute Provost Claire Leitch passed on their congratulations.

In 2017, 12-year-old Mason's carried out 18 acts of kindness in memory of his older brother Ross.

Mum Alyson was delighted after the awards night. She said: "It was such a brilliant night. It was a lovely evening that the young person's committee put on. We're so, so proud of Mason and he's over the moon. He never did the project to get recognition but to have it is so special.

"Mason thanked the people who nominated him for the award and he hopes to make them proud. He wanted to show young people that hard work pays off. He always says 'being kind is awesome'."

The Cumnock Academy pupil will also pick up the Cumnock Citizen of the Year award at Dumfries House next month.
