CUMNOCK couple Alex and Jackie Weir decided to collect money for a good cause from people viewing their spectacular Christmas lights.

It proved to be a wise move as they were able to hand a cheque to Suzanne Hunter and Jane McAusland from the 4 Connections youth and toddler group in the town.

They collected £336 but Mr Weir topped it up to £350 — adding to a massive electricity bill, but that is not an issue.

He explained: “I have put the display on for 12 years and would never have started if the cost was going to bother me.

“This is the first year we have raised money for charity and it went well. It was busy with people coming and going.

“We had a people from the USA who were here on holiday and had found out about the lights when they were in a town centre shop.”

There are an incredible 11,000 lights out together to create the spectacular display — more than 8,000 on the roof , 2,400 on the ground and the remainder spread throughout.
