FANTASTIC FLING

Cumnock’s first Spring Fling was a stunning success with more than 1,500 people enjoying the event.

One of the highlights of a great day was an Easter bonnet parade while The Great Big Egg Roll went down a treat.

The Easter bunny was there as well and was happy to pose for pictures while around 400 chocolate eggs were handed out to local kids.

Many of them enjoyed the treasure hunt which took place in the days leading up to the main event, with fantastic entries from every primary school.

Once again, the community showed how it can come together with volunteers, traders and several groups joining forces to ensure an amazing Spring Fling.

Cumnock Action Plan, Cumnock Business Association, Cumnock Juniors Enterprise and Vibrant Communities worked tirelessly for weeks beforehand.

Social media was awash with compliments, including Billie McMahon who said: “Beat the goalie area was fantastic! Food huts were brilliant. Loved how busy the square was.”

BLAZE DRAMA

Firefighters were on the scene of a forest fire near Sanquhar for a full 24 hours.

Crews were deployed from as far away as Kilmarnock and Dumfries to tackle the blaze. The alarm was raised to the outbreak at Glenglass Forest, on the outskirts of Sanquhar on Monday, May 8, at 12.30pm.

Appliances from the town, Thornhill, New Cumnock, Dumfries, Kilmarnock and Abington were joined by two units from Cumnock.

Thick smoke could be seen from some distance away, while firefighters were mobilised from 32 miles north — Kilmarnock — and 29 miles south, Dumfries.

Crews monitored the incident before leaving the scene at 12.30pm the next day.
