YOUNG football players in New Cumnock have been left in limbo after a pavilion at Greenhead Park was closed by council bosses.

The changing facility has been shut for over a month, forcing Glenafton Athletic youth teams to play away from home.

We previously told the story of Ochiltree Community FC who couldn’t use Kay Park in the town because a burst drain had flooded the pitch.

Now, Glenafton Athletic’s under 19 side have been unable to use Greenhead Park because they have no access to the pavilion’s changing facilities.

The pavilion has been closed for almost a month, meaning Glenafton 19s have had their first three games of the season away from home.

An ongoing asset transfer of the pavilion seems to have stalled in recent weeks leaving the club unsure where it stands. The council closed the pavilion after it was broken into twice and vandalised.

However, the club’s president, Ian Young, confirmed they will soon be back on the Greenhead grass. Mr Young said: “Glenafton 19s’ next three games will be played at Greenhead Park. They will get changed at our Loch Park before going over to Greenhead for the match.

“I don’t know if they have cut the grass or not, we have been fighting with the council to keep the pitch playable. I haven’t heard much about the asset transfer recently so I will bring it up at the next meeting.”

A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Council added: “The council can confirm that officers are supporting a local group with a community asset transfer for Greenhead Park Pavilion.

“Unfortunately the pavilion has been broken into twice in the last four weeks and the water cylinder was stolen causing damage to the building and rendering the facility unavailable for public use. In order to make the building safe and prevent further damage the pavilion has now been shuttered. East Ayrshire Leisure Trust has been in contact with the football teams who play their home matches at this park, to identify alternative locations.”
