CUMNOCK’S musical knight of the realm was invited to open a new venture last weekend.

Internationally famous composer Sir James MacMillan CBE was a guest of Marilyn de Blieck and Raymond Bramwell who have also spent a lifetime as musicians, teachers and performers.

Sir James spoke eloquently of his admiration for Marilyn and Raymond’s work over many years, and of the influence it had had on him in youth. He emphasised that ‘they have never given up’ although working in the arts is always fraught with difficulties both financial and practical.

Following his words and cutting of the ribbon at their Song Studio at 180 Main Street, Prestwick, he joined guests to enjoy some entertainment.

It was composed for the occasion by Marilyn and featured former Ayrshire Voices student Pauline Graham, now pursuing a distinguished career as a solo singer from her current base in the Republic of Ireland.

Marilyn said: “The Song Studio will meet a long-felt need for a centre of excellence in singing in this part of the world by providing a purpose-built environment for singers of all ages to study, rehearse and come together.

“The new Ayrshire Voices experience encompasses several areas – singing lessons for both young people and adults both individually and in groups, the opportunity to sing choral classics in the Choir of Ayrshire Voices, access to the AV Music Library now housed at the studio, and an administrative base for concerts in Ayrshire.

“It is our hope that the studio and its activities will become an integral part of the artistic and community life throughout Ayrshire.”

Meanwhile, preparations are gathering pace for this year’s Cumnock Tryst which takes place between September 28 and October 1.

Among the highlights are a series of events marking the 300th anniversary of the Dumfries Arms with a special concert.

Also in a varied programme is a return to the festival of the Dalmellington Band when they will perform under the baton of Martyn Brabbins, artistic director of English National Opera.

New Cumnock’s Jay Capperauld is also returning with his latest commission that will get its world premiere played by one of the world’s leading trumpeters, John Wallace.
