A MAN has been caged after driving dangerously into oncoming traffic.

Ryan Young, of Westwood Crescent in Ayr, pleaded guilty to repeatedly driving into the opposing carriageway on the A70 Ochiltree on Cumnock Road and causing oncoming vehicles to take evasion action to avoid collisions on June 23. The 28-year-old appeared from custody in front of Sheriff Desmond Leslie at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

Depute Fiscal, Lorri Pidgeon, explained: “It was around 9pm and the complainer was driving East and the passenger, his partner, noted a driver was striking grass verges and was slowing to an almost stop. Due to the manner of the vehicle, the complainer contacted the police.

“The complainer followed the driver, while his partner recorded the accused’s driving. She saw the driver driving into an oncoming motorist.

“The complainer followed as far as Cumnock and then continued on their journey. Due to the report, the policed chased and the accused was in the driver’s seat.

“A breathalyser test came back negative and he was found not to be under the influence of drugs.

“The complainer later phoned the police stating that she had a video of the incident.

“Another witness, who was driving the motor cycle seen the video on Facebook and went to the police office telling them that the accused’s driving was erratic and dangerous.”

Speaking on his behalf, defence solicitor Glenn Davis, said: “My client is 28 and is unemployed and bail was unexpectedly refused.

“There were tests carried out and he was coherent and there were no grounds for a field test.”

Sheriff Leslie interrupted: “Was he asleep while he was driving?”

Mr Davis replied: “He thinks that he was excessively tired at the time of the incident.

“He has never experienced any issues with driving and your Lordship may take the view of his jail time and that he hasn’t been in trouble for five years.

“He has been in custody for a whole calendar month.”

Young was sentenced to 60 days in prison and is banned from driving for one year.
