GORDON Neil has been at the heart of many new developments at Dumfries House.

Mr Neil has overseen many of the more visible upgrades at the estate in recent years.

Since the Duke of Rothesay saved the estate for the nation a decade ago, new buildings and facilities have emerged regularly.

Much of that development can be attributed to the work of Gordon, head of estates and facilities, and his team.

He said: “During the past ten years, the estate has truly blossomed, with numerous new buildings and features.

“We have a working farm, an outdoor centre, a beautiful walled garden and a maze, among many other developments.

“After overseeing the restoration of The Temple and establishing a formal grounds and gardening team, the first major project for which I was responsible was the installation of the magnificent Chinese Bridge.

“More recently, I have overseen the heritage-led restoration of the town hall and Tamar Manoukian outdoor swimming pool, both in New Cumnock “It has been so rewarding to be involved in the regeneration of a local community, not only by improving existing buildings and facilities but by providing job opportunities and, in turn, attracting visitors to the area.”

After more than 20 years in the construction industry, Mr Neil joined Dumfries House Trust two years ago.

His working life began as a joiner before he moved into contracts and facilities management in both the private and public sector.

While working, he completed a degree in Construction Management and Building Surveying.

“My previous experience has proved invaluable in my current role. I have overall responsibility for all of the properties and facilities on the Dumfries House estate as well as all new developments both on the estate and those we lead and support in the local communities and further afield.

“Over the coming years, the estate and associated facilities will continue to develop, with the outreach work, such as that carried out in New Cumnock, likely to increase further. “While new developments and working with local communities is rewarding and exciting, I still feel most privileged to spend every working day at Dumfries House and I look forward to continue being part of the wider team responsible for ensuring the ongoing preservation of the magnificent house.”
