CASUAL visitors to the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre are helping to ensure its future.

Each summer some visitors bring along old photographs or artefacts for possible future display and this year has been no exception.

The centre at Dunaskin near Dalmellington will be open on Sunday, August 20, from 11am to 4.30pm. Short rides in a brake van are the star attraction for most visitors.

There will be a lot more than steam on offer on Sunday. For parents of children under five, the Ayr Burners Cycling Group will be on hand to give first cycling lessons to toddlers.

They will run a fully supervised training event for under fives to help them gain balance skills on little balance bikes (without pedals), or learn to pedal for the first time.

There will also be something special for those interested in the nature around Dunaskin, thanks to East Ayrshire Leisure Trust countryside Rangers.

People will be able to take a closer look at local wildlife around the centre, in the company of the rangers, as well as the area’s natural beauty. This free event is suitable for young families even with buggies, but make sure you have suitable footwear.

If you are interested meet at the railway visitor centre at 1pm. Walks last about one hour. Places are limited so it’s first come, first served. Visit www.scottishindustrialrailwaycentre.org.uk or call 01292 739179.
