SHOPPERS were left shocked last week as it was discovered that Asda in Cumnock had been selling Coca-Cola more than a year past its sell-by date.

Two bottles of Coca-Cola Life had been left on the shelves - one of which expired in May, and one whose expiry date should have been September last year. We sent our reporter along to Asda to find out if the bottles were still on the shelf on Friday and the long expired bottle from May 2016 hadn’t been moved.

One customer, who did not wish to be named, told the Chronicle: “I was in Asda in Cumnock and there was cola on the shelf over a year past its date. I had seen it over a week ago and it was still there. It was the green Coca-Cola Life, one with May 16 and the other with September 16.”

Initially staff at the store told the Chronicle they could not trace the bottles.

However in a later statement, Anne Denney, Asda Cumnock general store manager, said: “We have regular freshness checks in place in our stores and products that have passed their Best Before date should not be on our shelves. We are very sorry that the customer was able to find these bottles of Coca-Cola in our store and would like to reassure him and all our Asda Cumnock customers that the bottles have been removed and we will ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
