SCHOOLS and pupils from across Cumnock and Doon Valley have been rewarded for their Dyslexia friendly approach.

Cumnock Supported Learning Centre and Sorn Primary were two of the five schools that walked away with Gold Awards from the East Ayrshire Dyslexia Friendly Schools Awards Ceremony at Dumfries House, Cumnock.

A total of 21 schools from across East Ayrshire were recognised at the third running of the annual event.

Muirkirk and Netherthird Primaries picked up Bronze Awards while Barshare, Mauchline and St Patrick’s Primaries were honoured with Silver Awards.

Each of the 21 winning schools gave a short presentation before being presented with their well earned awards by Provost Jim Todd.

Councillor Fiona Campbell, East Ayrshire Council’s cabinet member for skills and learning, said: “We take great pride in the fantastic educational opportunities offered to our young people to help them succeed and I’m very pleased the first gold Dyslexia School awards have been won this year.

“The efforts, dedication and continued commitment showcased in the presentations were a real inspiration and I congratulate all the deserving award winners on their achievement”.

East Ayrshire Dyslexia Friendly Schools is a model which aims to cultivate learning experiences and environments where pupils’ talents can flourish.

All schools are actively encouraged to engage with parents, carers and members of the school community to create classroom environments catering for all learning styles to make learning easier and more accessible for everyone.

Almost all schools in East Ayrshire are now working towards their Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award.

To date, some 67 per cent have achieved an award.
