The fourth generation of a family funfair is back in Cumnock 80 years after their first visit to the town.

Michael and Marcella Stirling are at the helm of the operation which is bringing fun and laughter to Woodroad Park.

Stirling’s Family Funfair last set up in Cumnock 18 years ago and they are loving being back and entertaining the community once more.

Among the many attractions is an old-fashioned ride called a rib-tickler mystic swing, which is proving popular with people curious to what it does.

While the Stirlings have been regulars in Cumnock, this will be the first time they have brought the rib-tickler with them.

Ayrshire is synonymous with the funfair industry while Michael and Marcella have family connections throughout the area and Upper Nithsdale.

He said: “Marcella was born at Ayr Barracks where the funfair used to be, while names like Codonas in Ayr and the Lawrence family from Mauchline are well known.

“This is our life, it is what we have done all our lives but like everything, we have to work a bit harder to keep the business going.

“We are in the Fife area in the spring before moving into Central Scotland for the gala season before heading to Ayrshire, then Sanquhar for the Riding of the Marches.”

There is free entry to the fair which is in town until Sunday, July 16, opening hours are 2.30pm to 9pm.

Marcella added: “There is something for all ages, family rides and children’s as well. We are a traditional family-run business and have lots of special offers.”
