COMMUTERS from across Cumnock and Doon Valley face almost two months disruption from Monday, June 19.

Network Rail are set to carry out repairs and strengthening works on two railway bridges on the B743 just outside Mauchline affecting those travelling by rail and road.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from Monday until Friday, August 4 when the works are scheduled to be completed.

The road will be closed overnight for five nights from Thursday, July 20 to Tuesday, July 25 from 11:30pm to 7am.

Network Rail have yet to confirm what disruption there will be for rail travellers, however the Chronicle understands that there will be a replacement bus service in operation for services between Auchinleck and Kilmarnock from Saturday, July 15.

Billy McKay, Network Rail programme manager, said: “We appreciate that temporary traffic lights on any road are inconvenient. However, this is the most efficient and safest way to undertake the work required on the bridge.

“Delivering this work on both of the two adjacent bridges, in just 6 weeks is a logistical challenge but we have planned the job carefully with our contractors and will complete it with the minimum possible inconvenience to the local community.”
