SANQUHAR Primary pupil Rowan Hastie was crowned Junior Burnsian for Scotland 2017 at a recent event.

Rowan and three schoolmates were competing at the Robert Burns World Federation National Finals at Carluke in South Lanarkshire.

Having won at the regional finals, Archie Gallacher, Ella McTier, Molly McTier and Rowan proved why at the national finals be achieving excellent marks.

Molly McTier came third for P6/7 recitations, Archie Gallacher achieved first place in the P4/5 recitations while Rowan Hastie was third for P6/7 singing and won the P6/7 recitations.

After being named best reciter for the day, Rowan was put forward to perform against the overall winners from the other competitions.

Another amazing performance earned her the junior title for Scotland, which also gives her the honour of performing at the Federation’s Burns Supper in January 2018.

Yet another success was achieved by Sanquhar’s young people as their exceptional talent helped Dumfries and Galloway being awarded best region for recitations and best overall at the competition.

“A huge thank you should also go to Lynn Forsyth and Victoria Hastie for all their hard work and commitment to all the children who compete. A huge well done to all.”

The national finals for primary pupils took place at St Athanasius Primary School, Carluke, sponsored by Golden Wonder and supported by The Jean Armour Trust.
