GEORGE Morton has been honoured for his work with the town’s junior football team by being named Cumnock Citizen of the Year.

His work with the club is voluntary and unpaid but he has dedicated four decades of loyal service to Cumnock Juniors.

Win,lose or draw, George will go about his business in a dignified manner, but there was a hint of quiet satisfaction when the Chronicle caught up with him at Cumnock’s match on Saturday...where else?

He said: “I was very surprised, but proud, to be named Cumnock Citizen of the Year.

“It is also a good thing for Cumnock Juniors Football Club as it’s what I have done for 41 years with the club that is the reason.

“Here’s hoping that goes on. It is an even better place to work now with all the kids being involved at Townhead Park.

“The improvements at the ground have transformed the place.”

It was a couple of good days for George as, less than 24 hours after he received the award at Dumfries House, his beloved Cumnock Juniors won 6-0 against rivals Hurlford United.

He added: “It could not have gone any better. There were several council officials at the presentation, including Fiona Lees.

“Also the provost, Jim Todd, who was in good form. All my family and friends were there as well, which made the night even better.”

Colin Chisholm is chairman of the Keir McTurk Memorial Committee which decides on the recipient each year.

He said: “George was one of several nominations we received, in recognition of the work he has done for Cumnock Juniors FC.”
