CUMNOCK’S MP Corri Wilson has been confirmed as the SNP candidate in the upcoming General Election on June 8.

The announcement was made following a meeting of the party’s national executive committee which ruled that Ms Wilson, along with the 53 other sitting SNP MPs, was reselected with immediate effect.

Ms Wilson, who represents the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock constituency has welcomed the news, saying that she wants to build on her ‘strong track record’ of standing up for local people at Westminster.

Since first being elected in May 2015, Ms Wilson has worked on more than 7,000 constituency queries, from problems for local live produce exporters caught up in the Channel Tunnel disruption, the threatened closure of the Guardian Surgical plant in Patna, and the former staff of Digital Equipment Ltd whose pensions are stagnating.

She has worked with local groups, such as the Ayrshire WASPI women, the rural communities struggling with gala charges, and towns facing the withdrawal of High Street banking, such as Cumnock and Dalmellington.

In addition, she has advocated on behalf of thousands of people on issues around welfare, immigration, windfarm developments, road closures, animal welfare and many, many other concerns.

More recently Ms Wilson was named as the SNP Disabilities Spokesperson at Westminster, and has actively challenged the UK Government over changes to disabilities benefits, access to Motability support, problems with the continuous cycle of assessment and reassessment for Personal Independence Payments, and the transition from Disability Living Allowance.

She said: “Representing the people of Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock in London has been an enormous privilege, and I look forward to asking voters to once again place their trust in me so that I can continue my strong track record of standing up for local people at Westminster.”

“During my 2015 election campaign I promised to put the interests of local people at the heart of everything I do as an MP, and I have worked hard to fulfil this promise. I have championed the diverse and distinct communities across this constituency, both at Westminster and locally, and I have spoken out on behalf of some of the most vulnerable in our society.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of retaining this seat. This general election is fundamental to the kind of country we want to be, and we simply cannot allow the Tories to inflict deeper cuts and further austerity on Scotland. With Labour in complete disarray, only the SNP are offering any real opposition to the Tories.”
