A GOOD Samaritan has been praised for returning cash to a Cumnock bank after she noticed it sticking out of their ATM.

And, after contacting the Chronicle, we published details of the incident which led staff at the TSB in Townhead Street to carry out an investigation.

The story now has a happy ending, after efforts to trace the forgetful person were successful with a bank spokeswoman getting in touch to tell us of the outcome, while thanking Roseann Hamilton.

She said: “We’ve been able to trace the customer who requested the cash withdrawal, so the branch are going to call to verify it was definitely them and then arrange to refund their account.

“If the cash hadn’t been taken by the Good Samaritan, it would have been retracted by the ATM and the customer account would never have been debited.

“When the cash is taken by someone else it can be tricky to identify the correct transaction from the ATM records unless we have a precise date and time, but thankfully we could do so on this occasion.

“Otherwise, the money would sit on the branch’s Overs’ Account until we were contacted by the customer.”
