A CONCERNED resident has taken a detailed picture from close range of Cumnock’s tyre mountain.

It shows the extent of the problem which is plaguing nearby East Ayrshire Community Hospital and businesses, which are all yards from the hoard of discarded tyres.

One local businessman has claimed that the company which dumped the tyres, Auto Waste Services, is still operating throughout Ayrshire and in parts of Glasgow.

Scotland’s environmental watchdog, SEPA, are currently working with local agencies including the council to track down owners of the firm responsible.

But our source says they are not doing enough to solve the problem and will be meeting their officials in the near future to discuss the issue.

He said: “Legitimate businesses have to have a waste management certificate to enable them to operate, with SEPA also overseeing the industry.

“There was a recent case in Glasgow where tyres were being dumped — two miles from SEPA’s office — which eventually cost the taxpayer to clear up.”

Callers to an Irvine phone number listed for Auto Waste Services are advised that it is “not available”...meanwhile the hunt continues.
