CUMNOCK'S Christmas light switch on will go ahead as planned despite fears over a mysterious Christmas tree.

One local resident contacted the Chronicle after they spotted the tree for the big occasion being delivered at The Square in Cumnock on Friday. Shortly after it arrived the tree was then taken back down, chopped in to pieces and taken away.

They said: "It was strange. We thought that the council had take the tree down and cut it up and we didn't know what was going on".

A council source has told the Chronicle that council officials who took receipt of the tree were not happy with its condition and refused to accept it from the supplier.

The supplier then took the tree, which was badly balding, and disposed of it.

East Ayrshire Council had another tree delivered earlier this week.

The Cumnock Christmas light switch-on, which is set for the Cumnock Christmas Festival this coming Friday, November 25, will go ahead as planned with the new Christmas tree.
