AUCHINLECK Indoor Bowling Club enjoyed triple success at a national awards ceremony.

As well as winning Scottish Indoor Club of the Year, the ladies won their league while the international squad managed by Auchinleck’s Jean Sykes were team of the year.

They picked up their accolades at the Scottish Indoor Bowling Awards night in Glasgow with bowlers from every corner of the country in attendance.

The roll of honour reads — Scottish Indoor Club of the Year-sponsored by Thomas Taylor Bowls Ltd; Winners of the Ladies League Championship-sponsored by Jack High Insurance; and Jean Sykes’ Scottish Ladies International players were team of the year-sponsored by David Gourlay Bowls.

Since the Auchinleck club opened in 1980 they have grown to become one of the country’s best as well as producing six world champions.

In 2015/16 highlights of Auchinleck’s season also included David Jagodowski, David Weir and Eddie Duncan claiming the Scottish Senior Triples title and Stacey Wyllie, Heather Kay, Hannah Smith and Claire Johnston, with the assistance of Bunty Mackin in the early rounds, winning the Scottish Ladies Fours title.

Carrie McLean also excelled and added to her already significant trophy haul by winning the world under-25 mixed pairs title.

Club president Jimmy Sloan said: “It’s absolutely brilliant for the club to win this award for the second time. We won it two years ago so it’s absolutely wonderful to win it again. It’s been a very good for the club which has had three Scottish winners, two beaten finalists and a world under 25 mixed pairs champion.”

Number two in the Auchinleck trophy treble was Jean Sykes being presented with the Scottish Ladies International Team award, followed by the league title for the ladies.

The final was held at Paisley with Auchinleck claiming the spoils over rivals Arbroath, to win the ladies title for the sixth time and move up to second in the all-time rankings.

Jean said: “The first award we won tonight was the team of the year which we won with the Scottish ladies international team. We won the series for the first time in eight years. I played in it for 17 years and won it many times as a player but this was my first time as manager and it meant everything to me.

“It was the best standard I’ve seen playing for Scotland for a long time - they were so dedicated, so up for it and so determined.

“The next award I was up for was the Scottish Ladies League and we were league winners.

“We have small band of ladies at the club; we had 51 lady members last year and we need 16 and some reserves each week. But these lasses were there every week and showed dedication, commitment and loyalty to the club.”
