COUNCIL bosses have said they will not re-think a lack of facilities at the new Cumnock shopping units.

We told how local residents were left stumped after it was revealed that the new shopping units on Townhead Street will have no public toilets.

East Ayrshire Council are currently in the midst of constructing brand new shopping units on Townhead Street which will replace the Glaisnock Shopping Centre, which has been earmarked for closure and demolition.

However, local residents are now questioning where shoppers are expected to go if they get caught short.

Sam McVie, Estates Manager for East Ayrshire Council told the Chronicle two weeks ago: “It was decided that there was not a requirement to replace these toilets as there are alternative toilets available for use by the public within Rothesay House and at the Tanyard.”

Staff at Rothesay House have said that there are no public toilets and that for members of the public to use the facilities it mean staff have to be taken away from their duties to allow them through security doors.

However, the council still maintains that the facilities at Rothesay House are public toilets and that there are no intentions of a re-think.

Stuart McCall, Legal Services Manager, East Ayrshire Council said: “There are toilets in Rothesay House which members of the public can use. In addition there are other public toilet facilities are at the Tanyard. There is therefore no intention to reconsider matters in respect of additional public toilet provision in Cumnock following the imminent closure and demolition of the Glaisnock Shopping Centre.”
