A CUMNOCK meeting to discuss Britain's EU membership was scrapped after a Yorkshire MP was slain in the street.

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP, Corri Wilson had planned to spend a day travelling across the constituency to answer questions ahead of this Thursday's EU referendum.

But those planned meetings were scrapped when Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox, 41, was gunned down in broad daylight last Thursday.

Ms Wilson was set to team up with colleagues in the European Parliament, Scottish Parliament and local councils to host a series of surgeries across the constituency on Saturday.

Ms Wilson was set to be joined at Cumnock Town Hall by the local MSP Jeane Freeman and East Ayrshire Council leader, Douglas Reid as well as MEP Alyn Smith. The MP was then set to travel to the SNP stall at the Holy Fair on Ayr’s Low Green with South Ayrshire Councillor Allan Dorans.

After that she was due to attend Maybole Town Hall to complete the day of campaigning.

Initially the MP had decided to press ahead with the meetings but the decision was made late on Friday afternoon to pull the plug.

Of the decision to cancel the event, Ms Wilson explained: “I organised the EU surgery events to give people the opportunity to put their questions and concerns on the referendum to their elected representatives. But, after the death of Jo Cox MP, it was important to reflect the decision of both the Remain and the Leave campaigns to suspend activity around the referendum for a few days, out of respect for this tragic and senseless loss of life.”
