A SPECIAL guest dropped by New Cumnock Pool last week as preparations gathered pace for the new season.

The Duke Of Rothesay paid an unpublicised visit to the popular facility while he was in the area attending a formal event at Dumfries House.

Staff were thrilled at the unexpected royal visit but equally delighted that Prince Charles was showing such an interest in their work and he spent some time finding out all about the heated pool.

He was aware that future development plans are creating much excitement in the community with a massive revamp scheduled to be carried out after the current season ends in September.

This will be taking place in conjunction with the Great Steward of Dumfries House Trust, meaning this will be the last season when the pool and surroundings will be in their current state.

Back to the present time, the pool is making a big splash on social media with more than 2,600 likes for its Facebook page in anticipation of the opening.

That also applies to the actual event, which takes place on Friday, May 6, between 4pm and 6.30pm, which will include a Big Splash Countdown at 4.15pm.

Swimmers will be invited to take the plunge at that precise moment with a DJ getting everyone in the mood, while the tearoom will be open for burgers and refreshments.

Afton Water Leisure, the voluntary group who operate the pool, have invited members of the Royal Life Saving Society who will be performing demonstrations of the vital work they carry out, and inviting the swimmers to join in. Entrance on the day is just £1 and everyone is welcome to get along a take a dip — the pool water temperature will be a balmy 30C — visit www.newcumnockpool.co.uk for more information.

Volunteers from Afton Water Leisure are hoping to equal, it not better, last year’s success when the pool opened for 12 weeks and welcomed 5,400 visitors.

There was in increase in those coming from other towns and further afield, including Canada.

, while the Dumfries and Galloway Sub Aqua Club staged a popular Try Dive event.
