TWENTY miners have returned to work at East Ayrshire’s largest opencast mine site, six months on from the collapse of Scottish Coal.

New owners Hargreaves Services have started mining operations at the House of Water complex near Dalmellington, with a small crew working at getting the mine up and running again.

The company say that they hope to increase the number of workers by around 100 on the site if they receive permission from East Ayrshire Council to carry out wider mining operations, with major reserves of coal believed to be still available on the mine site.
