School kids in Cumnock know that health and fitness is their call now - thanks to a handy mobile phone-shaped guide book.

The easy to read, compact booklet was written especially for young people by the NHS and with the help Kelly Saunderson, an Outreach Worker at Yipworld, and was launched last week at the community resource base on Barrhill Road.

Kelly said: "It's really important that we talk to young people in their language, without patronising them. I was delighted to be part of the group that helped develop the two consultation documents, and hope our 'mobile phone book' will encourage young people to take an interest in local health services. Young people need more of this type of information." Paul Ardin, Director of Primary Care Development, added: "We can't have a meaningful conversation with communities about health care without listening to the views of young people. One of the key messages members we are getting from members of the public is that they want more information about health services, in a format that they find useful. We are therefore very grateful to the members of the public who took the time to help develop these booklets." The booklet was the brainchild of an editorial group set up as part of NHS Ayrshire & Arran's consultation on its draft primary care strategy ('Your health - we're in it together'). The group teamed up members of the public with NHS Ayrshire & Arran's primary care team to produce a straightforward consultation booklet explaining the recommendations in the draft strategy.

With the consultation now in its second month, the primary care team continue to meet groups throughout Ayrshire and Arran and will visit Cumnock Town Hall on October 2 at 6.30pm.
