Worms: A Space Oddity
By Narin Bahar
WHEN you think about it, gamers have taken some very random animals to their hearts over the years. Forget adorable little puppies and fluffy bunnies, our pixellated pets of choice range from a spiky hedgehog to lemmings - hardly renowned for their intelligence and cuteness.
But arguably the oddest and yet most endearing creatures of all are even less photogenic. So why have we taken Worms to our hearts so?
Having appeared on every platform bar the Wii now, these weapons-laden invertebrates have finally made their debut on Nintendo's newest console, and it was definitely worth the wait.
For those not familiar with this oddly addictive turn-based game, in Worms you obliterate your enemies using a plethora of weapons while taking into account wind, hills and anything else which will impact your shot. In this latest incarnation the Worms have made first contact with alien races - and it turns out that those little green men are not friendly.
Playing with the Wii controls takes a bit of getting used to - you'll need to practice before taking on the first wave, but once you've got to grips with it it's surprisingly fun. The single player game boasts a range of different kinds of puzzles to overcome including timed challenges and battles just to stay standing. Some of the environments are fun to play in too - although the slippery ice level left me wanting to throw my Wiimote out of the window.
The gameplay, single player mode, graphics and new weaponry are all great making it one of the best Worms games for a while and worth investing in - blowing each other up never gets old. The game also offers four player multiplayer using one remote, but shockingly no online multiplay option - such a cornerstone of the portable console versions of the game - which is a big disappointment.
Four stars
