Swimmer shows Shear class

Local swimming sensation Johnstone Shearer has admitted he had no idea he had broken the Scottish Schools Record - because he was just so pleased to have beaten his rival.

Auchinleck Academy pupil Shearer, who hails from Drongan, made a blistering start to 2008 by winning gold in the 200 metres event at the Scottish Swimming Championships in Glasgow last week. And the success was made all the sweeter by him shattering the record.

But Shearer was in such a daze after the victory that he didn’t hear the music to signal that the record had been sent tumbling. And it was only when his coach congratulated him on the win afterwards that he realised what he had achieved.

Shearer, 15, said: “I didn’t know I had got the record until I got out of the pool. Normally when you go out and get the record the music starts, but I was just so happy to have won that I didn’t hear the music.`
