Community spirit has rallied Dalmellington residents together to raise money for the restoration of the village"s war memorial.

Dalmellington Community Council went door to door, posting letters to raise cash for the memorial"s restoration that was erected in 19922 and paid for by public subscription.

Chairman of the Dalmellington Community Council, William Steele, said: 'I think we"ve had a real Community spirit. The support from the village has been great. It"s not just the folk that has donated, a lot of organisations have supported us as well.

'The idea was that we asked the village to donate money so we could get it fixed. It"s just crumbling away and the names are difficult to read.'

Mr Steele added: 'We"ve had an estimate in for the restoration and cost which is £10,000 but we"ve raised £3,500 so far and the money is still trickling in.'

A spokeswoman for East Ayrshire Council told the Chronicle that the authority would assist the Community Council wherever possible.
