It was business as usual for schools across Cumnock and Doon Valley last week, despite council employees being on a 24-hour strike.

Picket lines were set up outside all the major schools on Wednesday, including Cumnock and Auchinleck Academies, bit according to sources there were no problems and the day passed peacefully.

Last week, parents and staff raised concerns about the strike action, in particular health and safety issues, including the lack of school crossing patrols and cleaning staff in school.

There were also suggestions that the long term affect would be feelings of resentment between those who went on strike and those who went to work.

On the strike action, a Council spokesperson said: “The schools throughout East Ayrshire managed quite comfortably to provide a full education service for our young people.

“Six out of nine secondary schools opened for S4-6 pupils, while three opened fully. All bar one of our primary schools opened fully and half of our early year establishments also opened.”
