BAIRD SET FOR £600K OF REFURBISHMENT WORK

By Craig Winning

The oldest museum in East Ayrshire will close for six months this weekend - to enable a dramatic £600,000 transformation in line with regenerating the centre of Cumnock.

The Baird Institute will shut on Saturday until July 2009 to allow for the major refurbishment at the museum which has been the focal point of the town’s conservation for over 100 years.

And last week the Council agreed to stump for the Baird’s overhaul which will bring it up to standard with other museums in the area, and allow for adventurous collection based exhibitions.

Councillor Jim Roberts, Chair of Lifelong Learning said: “The more we can do for the Baird all goes towards promoting regeneration and helps to bring in tourism.

"The links to Dumfries House are important and we will continue to work hard for the benefit of Cumnock and the surrounding area.”
