Heavy rains leave devastation in their wake across Cumnock, Doon Valley and Upper Nithsdale.

Torrential rains caused flooding and devastation across Cumnock, Doon Valley and Upper Nithsdale last week.

Cars had to be pulled from the mud in Muirkirk, gardens were ruined in Auchinleck and Catrine, and roads were covered in debris in Sanquhar.

Ann and Drew Gilliland of Haughyett Farm just outside Mauchline awoke to find their home flooded on Sunday August 10. The downstairs carpets were ruined and water was running in the front door and out the back.

Streets in Auchinleck and Catrine were also deluged by the rains last week. Eileen McIntyre of Shawlands Street, Catrine, said: “The Council came and unblocked the drains on Friday but it’s too late, far too late.”

A spokeswoman for East Ayrshire Council said: “The Council and Scottish Water both have a responsibilities for elements of drainage and sewerage system which have became inundated with the volume of water arising from the excessive rain fall.
