Local councillor Jimmy Kelly insists he did nothing wrong in accepting a trip to Barcelona as a gift from Scottish Coal.

Councillor Kelly spoke to the Chronicle after a story was printed in a national newspaper over the issue and revealed he declared in his register of interests a trip to see Barcelona v Celtic, which included flights and stay in a hotel.

Councillor Kelly denied the national newspaper’s claims that the trip cost £3,000 but stated he didn’t see a problem when he took it.

East Ayrshire Council Chief Executive Fiona Lees defended the gift but accepted it was ‘excessive.’

Nice work if you can get it! No wonder Scottish Coal employees can't get a decent pay rise.

Councilor kelly must have deserved it, after all, just look at all the backwards bending he does for the opencast owners.

Mr Kelly has compromised the integrity of the democratic process and the council by taking this "gift". It makes Mr Kelly look cheap and easily bought by big business interests. what concerns me is that Fiona Lees sees nothing wrong with what Kelly has done. I can see the voters voting out a lot of these people at the next election.

As a second point why did Scottish Coal single out Kelly for this gift? And did Scottish Coal not think that giving this "gift" to Kelly would go unnoticed? smacks of arrogance to me. East Ayrshires Planning Commitee as for too long been abl;e to get away with shocking deciosns . East Ayrshire council is going to find itself reportee to the Government Ombudsman for this sleazy episode.

Tsk, that's not very fair deleting comments! So why hasn't someone phoned Cumnock police to report this obvious crime?
