Drinking in public places is set to be banned in Kirkconnel, Kelloholm and Sanquhar after a new bye-law is a step nearer to being introduced.

The regulation ratified by Councillors in Dumfries and Galloway will be put in place if the plans are approved by the Scottish Government.

It is hoped the banning of alcohol in public places would tackle problems of anti-social behaviour in Upper Nithsdale more effectively.

A community survey in Sanquhar previously received 97 per cent support for the introduction of the bye-law.
