HARDIE TALK FROM CLARE
By Craig Winning
A leading British politician is set to visit Cumnock to deliver the annual Keir Hardie speech at a special event this summer.
Former Labour Minister Clare Short, who quit the party over the Iraq war back in 2003, has agreed in principle to participate in the event, which in recent years has included guest speakers Tommy Sheridan and George Galloway.
Her attendance follows a recent flower-laying ceremony at Keir Hardie's graveside in Cumnock, amid calls for more to be done in the town to remember the life of the great man, who was the first Labour Prime Minister and was a leading forerunner of Socialism.
