An opencast operator has been blasted for ignoring safety regulations after a local site was forced to shut down for four days last week.

Operations at the Greenburn Opencast site near New Cumnock ground to a halt last Thursday (May 2) after Health and Safety Inspectors issued prohibition notices, connected with a lack of site radios and other employee welfare concerns.

But operators Kier Mining are coming under fire from the trade union after it was revealed site radios were made compulsory as part of new legislation laid down by the HSE in the wake of two fatal accidents in the space of two years at other opencast sites in East Ayrshire.
