A Man has been killed at the Pennyvenie Opencast Site today. A statement from Scottish Coal released this evening confirmed the fatality.

The statement from Scottish Coal said:

"It is with regret that Scottish Coal has to announce a fatal accident this afternoon involving an employee of a local sub-contractor at its Chalmerston/Pennyvenie open cast coal site near Dalmellington. Andrew Foster, Managing Director said,

'Firstly, on behalf of all at Scottish Coal we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and work colleagues of the deceased.

He added: "The emergency services and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were called to the scene immediately following the accident. A full investigation of the incident has been launched. The site has been closed and will remain so until the initial investigation is complete.

'The company will cooperate fully with the Police and the HSE and will provide whatever assistance is required during the investigation. The Company remains committed to ensuring its procedures are as safe as possible to minimise the risk of workplace accidents.

'As an investigation is underway, it would be inappropriate to make comment on the specific details of the accident until we have the findings of the preliminary report.

'The priority right now is to help and support those most affected by this tragic event and out thoughts are with the family, friends and work colleagues of the deceased.'
